Program Goal
An exercise based approach directed at maximizing brain and vestibular function aimed at eliminating vertigo, reducing falls, improving overall function, mobility and the patients balance confidence.
Patient Mix:
Patients who have benefited from this therapy suffer from vestibular dysfunction that result in the following complaints: dizziness, disequilibrium, nausea, diminished willingness to turn head, motion sensitivity, position sensitivity, fatigue, inability to concentrate, poor gaze stability as well as difficulty with crowded visual environments.
Common type of Vestibular Pathologies:
- Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo
- Disequilibrium of Aging
- Central Vertigo
- Uncompensated vestibulopathy: (unilateral/ bilateral)
- Meniere’s Disease/Hydrops
- Cervicogenic Vertigo
Benefits of Balance Retraining Therapy:
- A reduction in dizziness during daily activities
- An improvement in both static and dynamic posturography
- A reduction in motion sensitivity
- A decrease in asymmetry of vestibular function
- Increased activity levels
- Increased balance function
Treatment Plan
- Patient assessment and evaluation by a physical or occupational therapist trained in Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy
- Therapists will observe posture, balance, movement and compensatory strategies and develop an individualized care plan
- An exercise program that combines specific head and body movements with eye exercises will be performed to strengthen muscles and increase tolerance for certain stimuli
